Ogun State’s 17-year-old tennis sensation, Comfort Yakubu, has booked her place in the women’s singles final at the ongoing Gateway Games 2024 following a gritty three-set victory over Ekiti State’s Ogunjobi Success.
In a tightly contested semi-final at the MKO Abiola Stadium tennis courts in Abeokuta, Yakubu overcame early nerves to triumph 7–5, 4–6, 6–4, showing maturity beyond her years in what was arguably her toughest match of the tournament so far.
Speaking to Athletic NG and Prime Sports Radio Enugu shortly after the match, the US-based teen admitted the encounter tested her mental resilience.
“It was a very tough match,” she said. “I just tried to stay in the points and believe more in myself. At some points in the game, I lost confidence, but once I found it again, I turned the tide.”

Currently ranked in the 500s in the junior global rankings, Comfort is keen to use the festival as a springboard for her international ambitions.
“Right now, I’m still playing in the juniors,” she explained. “I hope to break into the top 200 or even 100 by the end of the year.”
The final between Comfort Yakubu and Barakat Quadri is scheduled for Sunday at the MKO Abiola tennis court, with fans expecting a thrilling clash between youth and experience.
