Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi is positive that the team’s desire is to win their next opponent, Morocco, and move to the top.
The Flying Eagles recorded a hard-earned 1-0 victory over the Young Carthage Eagles at the June 30 Stadium on Thursday.
Akwa United midfielder Auwal Ibrahim’s 38th-minute strike secured the win, firing home the winning goal following a superb assist from left-back Emmanuel Okoro.
The win put the Flying Eagles in second position in Group B behind Morocco, who rallied to beat Kenya 3-2.

“It’s on to the next game,” the Bayelsa United centre-back told reporters. “We hope to win and go top of our group on our way to qualifying for the World Cup and winning the tournament.”
The Flying Eagles coach also had insights to share about their first outing, placing emphasis on their desire to qualify for the World Cup.
“There’s no secret to our victory other than the fact that we want to get the World Cup ticket,” he said in an interview. “The boys realised we have to get the first step right, and that’s what motivated us to win this game.”
The seven-time champions will face a Moroccan side dominated by foreign-based players in their next game on Sunday.
Coach Zubairu said he will map out a strategy that will give his team victory. “Morocco have more players playing abroad, but we’ll handle each game as they come,” he added. “The match against Tunisia is now in the past. How we approach the game is for our own consumption, but we’ll map out a way to beat them.”

“They’ve done well, but sometimes they need to study the team’s tactical approach. It’s not as if they’re underperforming; they’re doing well, but they need to blend with the team.
Today, three of them played, and two were on the bench. We have only five European-based players in our team.”
