Super Eagles handed lift as Ajayi steps up recovery

Super Eagles of Nigeria could receive a timely defensive boost ahead of next month’s international window, with Semi Ajayi progressing in his recovery from injury.

The 32-year-old centre-back has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring problem during Nigeria’s third-place play-off against Egypt national football team in AFCON 2025.

The injury ruled him out of recent club matches and cast doubt over his availability for upcoming national team commitments. He has played 12 matches in the English Championship scoring 1 goal since joing on free transfer from West Bromwich Albion.

The Super Eagles are due to compete in a Four-Nation Invitational Tournament in Amman, where they will face Iran, Costa Rica and hosts Jordan.

At club level, Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic confirmed Ajayi has returned to individual training, although he has yet to rejoin full team sessions.

“Semi is going well, but again, not back in the team training just yet,” Jakirovic said. “He’s still doing some individual rehab.”

The update suggests Ajayi is nearing competitive fitness, offering encouragement to Nigeria’s technical staff as squad planning intensifies.

Known for his aerial ability and organisational presence, the former Arsenal academy player has been a regular figure in recent Super Eagles campaigns.
