Trabzonspor defender Nwaiwu sidelined following brace against Karagumruk

Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor have confirmed that Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu is undergoing treatment after sustaining a thigh injury in Friday’s 3–1 league victory over Fatih Karagümrük.

The 22-year-old scored his first goals for the Black Sea club during the match but was forced off shortly after completing a quickfire second-half brace.

In a statement published on the club’s official website after the game, Trabzonspor provided details of the injury.

“Our Head of Medical Board, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Beşir, made a statement regarding the health status of our football player Chibuike Nwaiwu,” the club said.

Beşir added: “Following the examination and MRI scan of our player Chibuike Nwaiwu, who was injured and left the game during the Fatih Karagümrük match in the 24th week of the Trendyol Süper Lig Mehmet Ali Yılmaz Season, bleeding and edema were detected in the inner thigh muscle group of his left leg. Treatment for our player has been started by our medical team.”

Nwaiwu had turned the contest in Trabzonspor’s favour by scoring twice within three minutes in the second half, helping secure a crucial league victory.

However, shortly after netting his second goal, he signalled discomfort and was replaced, dampening what had been a standout individual performance.

The injury ruled him out of Trabzonspor’s subsequent Turkish Cup fixture in Istanbul, where they recorded a 4–2 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir to progress in the competition.

Since joining from Wolfsberger AC in January, Nwaiwu has featured in nine matches across all competitions, starting each game and quickly establishing himself as a regular in the defensive line-up.
