From World Cup winners and continental champions to record goalscorers and legendary captains, here are 12 players who have brought the curtain down on their international careers after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Manuel Neuer (Germany)
The Germany captain briefly reversed his international retirement to feature at a fifth World Cup before deciding to step away once again.
Despite Germany’s Round of 32 elimination to Paraguay on penalties, Neuer etched his name into history by becoming the goalkeeper with the most World Cup appearances, finishing with 23 matches at the tournament.
The Bayern goalkeeper retires with 128 international caps and remains one of the key figures behind Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph.
Neymar (Brazil)
Brazil’s all-time leading scorer has officially ended his international career without capturing football’s biggest prize.
Although fitness concerns limited his impact, Neymar scored against Norway in Brazil’s Round of 16 defeat to become only the second Brazilian after Pele to score in four different World Cups.
He retires with a record 80 goals in 130 appearances, adding only the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup to his list of international honours.
Riyad Mahrez (Algeria)
Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has also called time on his international career after his country’s World Cup exit against Switzerland.
The former Leicester City and Manchester City winger finished with 40 international goals and leaves just short of becoming Algeria’s all-time appearance holder.

Sadio Mane (Senegal)
After missing the 2022 World Cup through injury, Mane returned for one final tournament in 2026.

Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico)
Mexico’s legendary goalkeeper finally brought an end to one of football’s longest international careers.
The 41-year-old featured at an incredible six FIFA World Cups before retiring after earning 153 caps.
Ochoa admitted after the tournament that he no longer saw any reason to continue playing football following his international farewell.
Nicolas Otamendi (Argentina)
One of Argentina’s modern defensive greats signed off after helping his country reach another World Cup final.
The veteran centre-back played 139 matches for the Albiceleste and started the final defeat against Spain before ending an international career highlighted by World Cup and Copa America success.

Marko Arnautovic (Austria)
Austria’s all-time leading scorer and appearance holder also announced his retirement after the tournament.

Patrik Schick (Czech Republic)
At just 30, Schick is the youngest player on this list.
The Bayer Leverkusen striker chose to retire after the Czech Republic’s group-stage elimination, ending his international career with 26 goals in 56 matches.
He remains best remembered internationally for his spectacular halfway line goal against Scotland at Euro 2020.
Craig Gordon (Scotland)
Veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon has retired from both international and club football.
Although he did not feature during Scotland’s World Cup campaign, the 43-year-old bows out as his country’s second-most capped goalkeeper behind Jim Leighton.
Enner Valencia (Ecuador)
Ecuador’s all-time leading scorer has also ended his international career.
Valencia scored six goals across three World Cup tournaments and retires with 49 international goals, a record that looks unlikely to be broken anytime soon.
Fernando Muslera (Uruguay)
The experienced goalkeeper’s fifth World Cup proved to be his last.
Muslera, who briefly came out of retirement for the tournament, finished as Uruguay’s most-capped goalkeeper with 137 appearances after ending his international journey.

Jean Michael Seri (Ivory Coast)
The former Fulham midfielder rounded off his international career after Ivory Coast’s Round of 32 exit.
Seri’s greatest achievement with the Elephants came in 2023 when he helped the country win the Africa Cup of Nations and earned a place in the tournament’s Team of the Tournament.
With more than 60 caps, he leaves as one of the experienced figures of Ivory Coast’s golden generation.
