South Africa coach Desiree Ellis says there will be no margin for error when Banyana Banyana face Nigeria’s Super Falcons in a crucial 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff in Casablanca on Thursday.
The two African heavyweights meet at the Stade Moulay Rachid with a place in the inter-confederation playoff tournament at stake, after both sides suffered quarter final defeats at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria were beaten 1-0 by Cameroon, while South Africa fell 2-1 to hosts Morocco, leaving both teams with one final route towards next year’s World Cup in Brazil.
For Ellis, the disappointment of their WAFCON exit must now serve as motivation rather than a distraction.
“It’s not a place we want to be, but we have been given another opportunity. It’s a very big opportunity to go on a very long journey, so we have to grab the opportunity with both hands,” Ellis said.
The South Africa coach knows the quality of the opposition means her side cannot afford to produce anything less than their best.
“We obviously have to bring our A game…there’s no margin for error.”

Nigeria and South Africa have regularly crossed paths at major tournaments, with their recent meetings producing some memorable encounters.
The Super Falcons won the most recent meeting, edging Banyana Banyana 2-1 in the 2025 WAFCON semi-final in Casablanca, with Michelle Alozie scoring a spectacular added-time winner.
South Africa have nevertheless enjoyed notable success against Nigeria at the continental tournament, beating the Super Falcons at the 2012, 2018 and 2022 editions of the WAFCON.
Those victories form part of just four competitive wins South Africa have recorded against Nigeria, while the Super Falcons have won 17 other competitive meetings between the two sides.
Neither team can afford another setback, with defeat meaning the end of their immediate hopes of reaching the 2027 World Cup.
Ellis believes the disappointment of their WAFCON elimination could provide additional motivation for her players.
“The disappointment of losing the previous game is going to probably drive us to get a positive result.”
And with two of Africa’s biggest women’s football powers fighting for the same lifeline, Ellis expects another fiercely contested encounter.
“It’s not going to be an easy game, it’s the two big guns of Africa football.”

The decisive encounter is scheduled for 9pm at the Stade Moulay Rachid in Casablanca, with the winner advancing to the inter-confederation playoff tournament and keeping their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive.
