Youri Tielemans has apologised to Aston Villa supporters after comments suggesting Manchester United are a bigger club than his former side sparked a backlash.
The Belgium midfielder, who recently left Villa for Manchester United, had spoken positively about his three years at the Midlands club and credited the team with helping him rediscover his best form.
But his comments took a different turn when he said: “There are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”
The remark did not sit well with some Villa supporters, particularly after Tielemans had spent three seasons at the club and become an important figure during his time at Villa Park.
The 29-year-old has now attempted to draw a line under the controversy, acknowledging that he could have chosen his words more carefully.

In a statement posted on Instagram, and reported by BBC Sport on Thursday, Tielemans said:
“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I’m grateful for the past three years.”
“I must, however, admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.
“Wishing the club the best in the future.” he added
Tielemans’ relationship with Villa supporters had been built over three seasons after he joined the club from Leicester City. He went on to make 134 appearances and score 10 goals during his time in claret and blue.

Tielemans has now begun a new chapter at Old Trafford, where he will be expected to bring the experience accumulated during his spell at Villa and his earlier years at Leicester to Manchester United’s midfield.
