Super Eagles suffer Zaidu Sanusi blow ahead of AFCON 2027 qualifiers

Terem Moffi and Zaidu Sanusi completed remarkable comeback stories after helping Porto win the 2025/26 Liga Portugal title despite battling injuries, criticism and uncertainty before their triump

Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers have suffered an early setback, with Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi expected to miss around two months because of an adductor injury.

Sanusi picked up the injury during Porto’s 3-0 victory over Académico de Viseu on Saturday, forcing the Nigerian left-back off after just 17 minutes.

The 29-year-old was attempting to play the ball when he sustained the problem and, despite receiving treatment, could not continue. He was subsequently replaced by Martim Fernandes.

Medical tests carried out on Sunday confirmed the extent of the injury, with Portuguese publication O Jogo reporting that Sanusi is not expected to return until after the next international break.

Porto had initially confirmed that the Nigeria international had been added to the club’s medical report and would undergo further diagnostic examinations.

The timing is particularly unfortunate for Nigeria, with the Super Eagles’ 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign scheduled to begin in September.

Sanusi is therefore expected to miss the opening matches, leaving the technical crew with the immediate task of finding an alternative at leftback.

The Porto defender has remained an important option for Nigeria in that position, making his absence a significant concern for Eric Shelle as the Super Eagles begin the latest qualification campaign towards the 2027 AFCON tournament.
