Arthur Okonkwo has been handed another opportunity to stake his claim for the Super Eagles, with Eric Chelle including the Charlton Athletic goalkeeper in Nigeria’s squad for the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The 24-year-old’s selection was confirmed on Monday after Charlton announced that Okonkwo had been called up for Nigeria’s September fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, adding another dimension to a growing contest for the national team’s number one shirt.
Okonkwo arrives with an impressive start to his senior international career behind him. His first two appearances for Nigeria produced two clean sheets, beginning with a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi final in London.

Four days later, he was back between the posts for the final against Jamaica and again finished the game without conceding as Nigeria secured a 3-0 victory.
Those early performances have now earned Okonkwo another opportunity under Chelle, although the goalkeeper faces established competition from Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye.
Nwabali has been Nigeria’s prominent goalkeeping option in recent times, while Okoye’s experience at club level with Udinese continues to make him a strong candidate for Chelle’s plans.
The arrival of Okonkwo therefore gives the coach three notable options as he prepares for a qualifying campaign in which there will be little room for dropped points.

The timing is significant for Nigeria after the Super Eagles missed out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making qualification for the 2027 AFCON an important target for Chelle and his squad.
Nigeria will begin their Group L campaign against Madagascar on September 25 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo before travelling four days later to face Guinea-Bissau.
The qualification picture adds further pressure to those fixtures. Tanzania are also in Group L and, as one of the hosts of the 2027 AFCON, have already secured their place at the tournament.
That means only one additional team from the group will qualify, making every point particularly valuable for Nigeria.

Okonkwo’s inclusion ensures that the goalkeeper’s strong start has not gone unnoticed, but with Nwabali and Okoye also competing for selection, Chelle now has a genuine decision to make before Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying campaign gets under way.
