Deborah Abiodun has taken another step in her growing career in the United States, with the Super Falcons midfielder set to continue her journey at Washington Spirit after reaching a new agreement with the National Women’s Soccer League club.
The 22-year-old’s decision reflects the progress she believes she has made since arriving in Washington ahead of the 2025 season, a period that has seen her move from a loan spell into a more established role within the team.
“The Spirit has become my home over the past year and I’m thrilled to renew my commitment to DC,” Abiodun said. “I have seen a lot of growth in my game with this club and I look forward to continuing to contribute to its success over the next three seasons.”
Washington confirmed on Thursday that the new agreement will keep the Nigerian midfielder at the club through 2028, with a mutual option to extend the contract for another year, until 2029.
Abiodun initially joined the Spirit after two seasons with the University of Pittsburgh Panthers and spent the first half of 2025 on loan to gain professional experience.
Washington recalled her in August that year, and she went on to contribute to the club’s run to the NWSL Championship. She has since made 21 appearances for the Spirit, scoring once and providing one assist.

Washington Spirit sporting director James Hocken praised the midfielder’s contribution and development, highlighting her work off the ball and composure in possession.
“Deb brings a very unique skillset to our midfield,” Hocken said. “She brings an incredible energy off the ball and is a calming influence on it. Her development since starting on our loan pathway has been a joy to watch and we are excited to keep her in the District for the foreseeable future.”
The new contract comes as Abiodun continues her recovery from an injury sustained while on club duty. The club’s announcement did not specify a return date.
Her development in the United States has also coincided with her growing experience at international level with Nigeria.

Originally from Oyo State in southwestern Nigeria, Abiodun made her Super Falcons debut in September 2022. She has since represented the country at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games.
She was also part of Nigeria’s squad that won the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, securing the country’s 10th continental title.
Before turning professional, Abiodun spent two seasons with the Pittsburgh Panthers, making 34 appearances and recording 10 goals and three assists. She earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honours in both seasons, receiving Freshman and Third Team recognition in 2023 before being named to the Second Team in 2024.
Her new deal gives her a longer term platform at Washington as she works towards returning to full fitness and continuing her development in the NWSL.
The Spirit are scheduled to face Chicago Stars FC at Audi Field on Sunday, November 1, in their Decision Day fixture, although the club has not indicated whether Abiodun will be available for the match.
