‘A dream come true’: Nwaiwu relishes Super Eagles debut after win over Iran

Chibuike Nwaiwu says fulfilling a lifelong ambition to represent Nigeria was a “dream come true” after making his debut in the 2-1 victory over Iran.

The defender who plays for Trabzonspor was handed a late call-up following the withdrawal of Calvin Bassey during the international break.

Despite arriving on short notice, Nwaiwu was named among the substitutes by head coach Eric Chelle and was introduced early in the second half after an injury to Igoh Ogbu.

The 22-year-old initially showed signs of nerves but grew into the game as Nigeria held on to secure the win.

“It’s a privilege for me to represent my country; it is the dream of every footballer in the world,” Nwaiwu said.

“I am very happy to be here and to have made my debut today. Iran is a very good side that consistently qualifies for the World Cup, but we took our chances and did a great job.”

Nwaiwu also reflected on his journey to the national team, which began in the Nigeria Premier Football League before his move abroad.

“I believe in God and I believe hard work pays off. Ever since my time in the NPFL, I always told myself I would wear the national team shirt,” he said.
