Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle says the Super Eagles can still reach the 2026 World Cup despite slipping to third place in Group C after their 1-1 draw with South Africa in Bloemfontein.
The result, coupled with Benin Republic’s emphatic victory over Lesotho in the group’s other match, leaves Nigeria on 11 points from eight games three behind Benin, who are now second with 14 points, and six behind leaders South Africa on 17.
Speaking in his post-match press conference after a draw against South Africa , Chelle admitted his side were left frustrated in Bloemfontein.
“My players are professionals and I know they will still want to win the remaining two games. A lot can happen over the next one month. But before that, we will have to analyse our performance tonight, which will not be easy.”

Since taking over from Finidi George, Chelle has overseen four matches, collecting eight points from a possible 12.
“To draw with South Africa in South Africa is a good result, but we wanted to win, so we’re a bit disappointed tonight,” he said.
Nigeria fell behind in Bloemfontein when William Troost-Ekong turned the ball into his own net before Calvin Bassey’s header just before half-time restored parity.
But with Rwanda level on 11 points and Benin’s latest victory lifting them above Nigeria, the Super Eagles now face an uphill task.
