The club’s struggles were compounded on Sunday after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Godswill Akpabio FC at the Uyo Township Stadium—an outcome the team has described as a “painful loss.”

With just four wins, five draws, and nine defeats in 18 matches, Abakaliki FC sit bottom of Group B with 17 points. They kicked off their giant-killing spree by edging Katsina United 1-0 in the Round of 32, before a 2-0 triumph over African giants Enyimba FC in the Round of 16.

A 2-1 win over Nasarawa United in the quarterfinals set up a dramatic semi-final clash with Ikorodu City FC, where Abakaliki held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties.
Their opponents in the final will be Kwara United, who eliminated Rangers International FC in the other semi-final.
The 2025 Federation Cup final marks a first-ever appearance for both Abakaliki FC and Kwara United, with the winner earning a coveted spot in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
