Abakaliki FC hit by internal crisis ahead of Federation Cup Final

Abakaliki FC fairytale run to the 2025 President Federation Cup final has been marred by internal unrest and relegation worries ahead of final

Tension is reportedly brewing within the camp of 2025 President Federation Cup finalists Abakaliki FC following the alleged slashing of players’ salaries, triggering unrest just weeks before their historic final appearance.

According to Sports Light Hub, the decision has caused a stir among players and supporters alike, especially with the team’s league form failing to inspire confidence.

Sources suggest club management is growing increasingly frustrated with the side’s performances in their debut Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign.

The club’s struggles were compounded on Sunday after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Godswill Akpabio FC at the Uyo Township Stadium—an outcome the team has described as a “painful loss.”

With just four wins, five draws, and nine defeats in 18 matches, Abakaliki FC sit bottom of Group B with 17 points. Despite their precarious position, the Ebonyi-based side remains hopeful of avoiding relegation, with two crucial games remaining—starting with a showdown against Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) FC.

A Fairytale Cup Run Amidst Chaos

While the league campaign has faltered, Abakaliki FC’s journey in the 2025 President Federation Cup has captured national attention. The “Rice Boys” have stunned three top-tier Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) sides en route to the final.

They kicked off their giant-killing spree by edging Katsina United 1-0 in the Round of 32, before a 2-0 triumph over African giants Enyimba FC in the Round of 16.

A 2-1 win over Nasarawa United in the quarterfinals set up a dramatic semi-final clash with Ikorodu City FC, where Abakaliki held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties.

Their opponents in the final will be Kwara United, who eliminated Rangers International FC in the other semi-final.

The 2025 Federation Cup final marks a first-ever appearance for both Abakaliki FC and Kwara United, with the winner earning a coveted spot in the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
