AFCON 2025: Super Eagles to train but will not travel amid unpaid bonus row

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will train later today despite an ongoing dispute over unpaid win bonuses at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Earlier in the day, players and coaching staff decided not to train or travel in protest over outstanding bonuses from four AFCON 2025 matches, victories against Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Mozambique.

Journalist Oluwashina Okeleji reported that the squad was waiting for the payments to be settled and would suspend full preparations until the issue was addressed. Nigeria are currently based in Fes, where they trained before halting activities.

They had been expected to travel to Marrakech on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final against Algeria, but indicated they would remain in Fes if their demands were not met.

Okeleji later provided an update confirming that the players will train today, even though the bonus issue has not yet been resolved.

The dispute adds to a history of financial concerns involving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Head coach Eric Chelle was also owed payments before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

It is the second such disruption involving the national team in three months. During the November 2025 international window, players staged a brief protest over unpaid entitlements ahead of their World Cup qualifying fixtures against Gabon, although the matter was settled within 24 hours.

Separately, journalist Tobi Adepoju quoted a senior NFF official as saying the payments had already been initiated.

“The monies have been processed from the Central Bank of Nigeria to individual banks,” the official said. “The players and officials will receive all their bonuses when the process is completed.”
