AFCON 2025: Uzoho responds to criticism ahead of Super Eagles opener against Tanzania

Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has addressed criticism surrounding his inclusion in the Super Eagles squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Uzoho, who plays his club football with Omonia Nicosia, was named in Éric Chelle’s AFCON squad despite limited game time this season, a decision that drew reaction from sections of the Nigerian football public.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, the 27-year-old said his priority is contributing positively whenever he is called upon.

Uzoho, who will be featuring at his fourth AFCON, described his continued involvement with the national team as a source of pride and gratitude.

“I’m at my fourth AFCON, it’s a thing of joy for me, and also, I thank God for giving me the strength to be always fit whenever the time comes, and it’s a good feeling.”

He said he has learned not to be defined by previous setbacks in a Super Eagles shirt.

“Like I said, the past is the past, I don’t dwell in the past. Every time I have an opportunity, I always give my best and that’s what I intend to do if I get the chance this time around, but the fans should expect a good performance from anyone who gets to play.”

Stanley Nwabali expected to remain Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the tournament, Uzoho said competition within the squad has been healthy and beneficial.

He highlighted the unique nature of the goalkeeping position and the importance of mutual support among teammates.

“Each of the goalkeepers have their special abilities. The goalkeeping position is a special position, and we find a way to create a healthy competition for us within the squad.”

Uzoho also reflected on losing his starting role following an error during Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign, describing his response as positive rather than bitter.

“Positively, because it’s a game of competition. In every position on the team, we have two or three great players in that position.

“The competition has to be there, so when he was chosen, I gave him my support, and if he’s chosen again, it’s the same.”
