Alalibo reveals how first Abia Warriors goal fuels confidence for historic Confederation cup campaign

Abia Warriors centre-back Somiari Alalibo scored the decisive goal as the Umuahia side edged Katsina United 1-0 in their NPFL matchday four clash.

Alalibo volleyed home in the 51st minute, showing composure and control from a Taheer Abubakar corner.

The strike marked his first goal for Abia Warriors since joining from Enyimba International in the summer transfer window.

“As a defender, it feels really great to contribute with a goal and I’m joyful. Scoring my first goal for my new club, and in my first home game, is a very special moment for me. Being that it gives me confidence and shows the hard work we put in as team,” Alalibo told Athletic NG.

The win took Abia Warriors to six points from four games, making it back-to-back home victories and leaving them 10th on the NPFL log.

“Very important. Every point matters, and yesterday’s win gave us momentum. It boosts our confidence going into the continent, keeps us on track with our season’s objectives,” he added.

The former Enyimba International captain joined Abia Warriors in the summer after spending five years in Aba.

During his time with the People’s Elephant, he won the NPFL title and made 70 appearances across the league, CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup and the African Football League.

He has also previously played four matches in the CAF Confederation Cup and two games in the CAF Champions League.

Abia Warriors, guided by coach Imama Amapakabo, finished third last season to qualify for their first-ever CAF Confederation Cup appearance.

“We are working very hard in training and the spirit in camp is high. We know the CAF Confederation Cup is a big stage, so we’re focused, united, and ready to give our best to represent the club and our fans,” Alalibo said.

The Umuahia-based club will face Malian side Djoliba AC in the preliminary round 1st leg on 21 September 2025.
