Alex Iwobi finally breaks silence on why he left Arsenal

Nigerian international and Fulham star Alex Iwobi has opened up about his departure from Arsenal in 2019, revealing that he never wanted to leave the club.

Iwobi, who started his career at Arsenal’s academy and youth team, made his debut for the Gunners in 2015 and went on to make 149 appearances, scoring 15 goals and registering 23 assists.

In an interview on the Culture Cam Podcast, Iwobi shared that he was on vacation with his family in Dubai when his agent informed him that Arsenal had agreed to a deal with Everton to sell him. “Three or two days before the transfer deadline day, my agent said Everton are interested. I said nice. I’m kind of comfortable at Arsenal,” Iwobi said.

Iwobi’s agent told him that Arsenal had already handed in the medical, and they might want him gone. Despite his initial reluctance, Iwobi eventually joined Everton in August 2019 for a reported €30.40m.

During his four-year stint at Everton, Iwobi made 140 appearances, scoring nine goals and providing 17 assists. He left the club in 2023 to join Fulham, where he has made 76 appearances, scoring 15 goals, including nine goals in the Premier League this season.
