The Algerian Football Federation has confirmed it has submitted formal complaints to both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA following its elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by Nigeria.
The complaints relate to the performance of Senegalese referee Issa Sy and his officiating team during the quarter-final match, which Nigeria won 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals.
Algeria believe several key decisions influenced the outcome of the contest and have called for a full review of the match by the game’s governing bodies.
The Super Eagles took control of the tie early in the second half, with Victor Osimhen opening the scoring from close range before setting up Akor Adams for Nigeria’s second goal. Algeria struggled to create clear chances and failed to register a shot on target across the match.
Despite Nigeria’s dominance, the Algerian FA has maintained that a penalty appeal was wrongly dismissed and that a number of decisions consistently went against their team.
They have also raised concerns about the conduct of the referee after the final whistle, as well as alleged incidents involving players and media personnel in the tunnel area.
In a statement confirming the complaints, Algeria said the matter had now been formally escalated to both CAF and FIFA, with a request for the officiating performance to be thoroughly reviewed.

CAF and FIFA are yet to issue public responses, but both bodies are expected to assess the reports and any supporting evidence as part of their disciplinary and refereeing evaluation processes.
