Amy Okonkwo shines in defeat as Besiktas lose EuroCup thriller

D’tigress captain Amy Okonkwo delivered an outstanding individual performance, but Besiktas Women fell short in a dramatic 84–82 overtime defeat to Athinaikos in the Women’s EuroCup.

Besiktas fought back from 10 points down to level the game at 75–75 in regulation after a spirited fourth-quarter rally, outscoring their hosts 15–5 to force extra time. However, the Greek side edged the additional period 9–7 to claim victory in Athens.

Okonkwo was Besiktas’ standout performer, finishing with 21 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. The forward was clinical inside the paint, converting six of eight two-point attempts and missing just once from the free-throw line.

Maria Fasoula matched her with 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Mamignan Touré added 17 points and five assists in an intense contest.

Athinaikos, who had controlled the opening half with scores of 25–20 and 26–20, relied on Holly Winterburn’s game-high influence. The British guard led their attack with 19 points and six assists.

Robyn Parks contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Alexis Prince and Borislava Hristova added 13 and 12 points respectively.

The result marked Besiktas’ third defeat in five EuroCup outings and their second consecutive loss in all competitions, following an 81–76 setback against Cukurova in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League.

Besiktas will look to respond when they host Nesibe Aydin in domestic action on Saturday as they seek to revive their EuroCup ambitions.
