Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez says the desert Foxes are ready for a demanding Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final against Nigeria, as the two former champions meet again in the last eight of the tournament.
Algeria booked their place with a dramatic extra-time win over DR Congo, sealed by Adil Boulbina’s late goal, while Nigeria progressed comfortably after a 4-0 victory against Mozambique.
Saturday’s tie in Marrakech revives a familiar rivalry. The sides last met at AFCON in the 2019 semi-finals, when Mahrez’s stoppage-time free-kick sent Algeria through on their way to lifting the trophy.

Speaking to Algerian outlet Ebotola after the win over DR Congo, Mahrez said his side had controlled large periods of the contest.
“I think that on the whole game, if the scales were to tilt on one side, it was ours,” he said.
“We faced a good Congolese team, who played with cohesion and left little space, but we were solid.”

Mahrez added that Algeria’s defensive strength and individual quality could again prove decisive.
“We haven’t conceded many opportunities, and we still know we have players who can make a difference,” he said.

Turning his attention to Nigeria, the former Manchester City winger acknowledged the challenge posed by the Super Eagles.
“Nigeria? We know them well; the game will not be easy,” Mahrez added.

Asked whether the quarter-final could again be decided by a dramatic late moment, he said: “A free kick at the last minute again? We will see, anything is possible.”
Nigeria, runners-up at the previous Africa Cup of Nations, have been among the standout sides at AFCON 2025, winning all four of their matches so far.
