The Handball Federation of Nigeria has commended the organisation of the National Under-12 and Under-15 Handball Championship in Umuahia, describing it as a boost for grassroots sports development.
Speaking during the competition, the federation’s South-East zonal representative, Onyebuchi Emmanuel Asogwa, praised the standard of facilities and logistics provided by the Abia State government.
He said improvements in infrastructure, including road networks and accommodation arrangements such as the use of the NYSC Camp Igbere, created a conducive environment for players and officials.
“I am fulfilled and happy with what is happening in Abia State, particularly with this tournament. The facilities and general organisation are commendable,” Asogwa said.
The official also highlighted broader development across the South-East, pointing to progress in Enugu State. He expressed confidence that the state is capable of hosting a successful National Sports Festival in the future.
“Our governor is a ‘talk-and-do’ leader who has consistently fulfilled his promises. Based on ongoing developments, Enugu State is ready to host a successful National Sports Festival,” he added.
Asogwa addressed the absence of Enugu teams at the tournament, attributing it to administrative delays rather than lack of preparation.
He explained that the teams had been camped in Nsukka but were unable to travel after final approval from the state government was not secured in time.
“It was purely a logistical issue. The teams were ready and in camp, but we could not get the necessary approval before the governor travelled,” he said.
A major focus of the championship has been the federation’s renewed effort to eliminate age falsification in youth competitions. Asogwa said stricter screening processes had been introduced to ensure players compete within the correct age categories.
He warned coaches and officials against engaging in fraudulent practices, stressing that age manipulation could have long-term consequences for young athletes, particularly in official documentation.
“We are determined to ensure that Under-12 truly means Under-12, and Under-15 remains Under-15. This is the only way to build credibility and reposition Nigerian sports over the next few years,” he said.
