Benin midfielder Junior Olaitan wows to take down Super Eagles to revenge rejection

Benin’s midfielder Junior Olaitan has fired a warning shot ahead of the crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in October, vowing to “sink” the Super Eagles. Olaitan, who plays for Grenoble in the French Ligue 2, was born to a Beninese mother and Nigerian father and opted to represent Benin despite growing up in Nigeria.

Olaitan’s decision to represent Benin was born out of frustration with the lack of opportunities in Nigeria. “When I wanted to play for the U17s, I was not chanced,” he revealed. However, he has thrived under Benin coach Gernot Rohr, starting the last ten competitive matches contested by the Cheetahs

Olaitan has faced Nigeria three times in competitive fixtures over the past year, with the most recent encounter ending in a 1-1 draw at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny. He provided an assist in the match, which helped Benin qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Olaitan exuded confidence ahead of the October match, saying, “We’ll sink them.” He added, “When we play against the Super Eagles, they are from Nigeria, I am the only one from Benin. I do my job. They are happy to watch me play every time against the Super Eagles.”

Olaitan reserved high praise for Benin coach Gernot Rohr, who did not hand him a call-up to the Super Eagles during his stint with Nigeria. “Gernot Rohr is a good coach, he’s like a father to me. He let me have more confidence in the team than before, he’s a good man.”

Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C with seven points, one less than Benin. The Super Eagles will face Benin in Uyo in October, and the result could have significant implications for their World Cup qualification hopes.
