Big Blow: Victor Boniface to miss remainder of season after knee surgery decision

Werder Bremen have confirmed that Nigeria international Victor Boniface will not feature again this season after the club decided surgery was the best option to address his ongoing knee problem.

The Bundesliga side said the striker will undergo a surgical procedure following specialist consultations in Austria, bringing an early end to his campaign with the club.

Boniface, who joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has made 11 appearances across competitions, registering two assists. However, persistent knee issues have limited his availability and performances since his arrival.

The decision to proceed with surgery was reached after an examination by knee specialist Professor Dr Christian Fink in Innsbruck. Werder Bremen confirmed that the recommendation aligned with assessments from their medical team as well as doctors at parent club Bayer Leverkusen.

Following the consultation, Boniface agreed that surgery offered the clearest path to resolving a problem that has troubled him for an extended period.

The knee issue had previously caused the collapse of a proposed move to AC Milan during the summer transfer window.

Werder Bremen’s Head of Professional Football, Peter Niemeyer, said the outcome brings certainty for all involved.

“We are pleased that we have now found a solution and that Victor will undergo surgery. This provides clarity for all parties. Due to the rehabilitation process, we no longer expect Victor to play for Werder this season,” Niemeyer said.
