CAF confirms $1m annual funding for NFF amid sweeping African football reforms

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to receive $1m (about ₦1.4bn) every year after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed a significant increase in financial support for its member associations.

The decision forms part of a broader restructuring programme unveiled by CAF president Patrice Motsepe, which also includes reforms to senior national team competitions and the launch of a $1bn commercial tender.

Motsepe said the changes would allow CAF to provide consistent financial backing across the continent.

“The restructuring of the CAF senior national team competitions and the USD 1 billion tender that we have initiated will enable CAF to contribute USD 1 million every year to each of the 54 CAF member associations,” he said.

The new figure represents a fivefold increase on the previous annual allocation and is expected to ease financial pressures on national federations, including the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which oversees multiple national teams, domestic leagues and grassroots programmes.

CAF said the additional funding would be targeted at long-term development rather than short-term spending.

Motsepe highlighted youth and women’s football as key priorities.

“We will allocate a substantial amount of financial and other resources to training and developing young boys and girls football players, as this is amongst the best investments we can make for the future of African football,” he said.

CAF also confirmed that prize money for its major club competitions the Champions League and Confederation Cup will increase, with revised figures to be announced after the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Alongside the financial reforms, CAF has outlined plans for a new African Nations League, to be organised in partnership with FIFA and staged annually, except during World Cup years.

During World Cup cycles, senior national team competitions will be suspended to allow countries to focus on qualification campaigns.

Motsepe said the revised calendar was designed to reduce clashes between club and international commitments.

“We want to ensure that African football players do not find themselves in calendar or fixture conflicts between their clubs and national teams,” he said.

CAF believes the combined impact of increased funding, calendar reform and commercial expansion will strengthen Africa’s position in the global game.

“The future of African football is bright,” Motsepe added.
