CAF to announce host for 2026 WAFCON within 48 hours

The Confederation of African Football says it will announce the host nation for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) within the next 48 hours following weeks of uncertainty over the competition’s venue.

Doubts have surrounded the tournament after reports suggested Morocco could be reluctant to stage the event, which had initially been scheduled to take place there.

CAF communications officer Luxolo September said the governing body was holding discussions and would soon clarify the situation.

“CAF will communicate within the next 48 hours on the situation regarding the #TotalEnergiesWAFCON26,” September wrote on social media.

“There have been several discussions for weeks. The matter is receiving urgent and high-level attention.”

Morocco had originally been named as host, which would make it the third consecutive time the country staged the continental women’s championship.

However, uncertainty increased after the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in January, which was accompanied by controversy over alleged officiating bias in favour of the hosts.
