CAFWCL: Bayelsa Queens book WAFU B semifinal berth after dominant ASKO victory

Bayelsa Queens are through to the WAFU B semifinals after outclassing ASKO setting up a decisive clash for top spot in the group.

Bayelsa Queens have secured their place in the semifinals of the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B qualifiers after a commanding 3-0 win over ASKO of Togo.

The Nigerian champions dominated Wednesday’s clash at the Stade du Lycée Scientifique and were in control from start to finish, though they had to wait until the second half to make their superiority count.

After creating several opportunities in the first period, Bayelsa were denied by wasteful finishing and determined defending. ASKO came close to a shock lead when a strike clipped the post, but the sides went into half-time level.

The breakthrough arrived just two minutes after the restart when ASKO defender Oumou Bani turned the ball into her own net under pressure.

Six minutes later, Bayelsa doubled their advantage as Alaba Olabiyi rose to meet Janet Akekoromowei’s cross with a powerful header.

Shakirat Moshood sealed the result midway through the second half, running onto a long ball from Sefiat Idris before calmly finishing with her left foot. It was Moshood’s second goal of the competition, further enhancing her reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest young talents.

The victory follows Bayelsa’s 2-1 triumph over Ghana’s Police Ladies in their opening match, taking their tally to six points and guaranteeing progression to the semifinals with a game to spare.
