Akwa United Head Coach Kennedy Boboye is on a mission to turn the club’s season around by leading them to President Federation Cup glory, despite their ongoing relegation battle in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The Promise Keepers will begin their 2025 FA Cup campaign on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, against Kebbi United in a Round of 64 clash at the Bwari Mini Stadium, Abuja. With their league form struggling, a deep cup run could offer Akwa United a lifeline to continental football next season.
Despite Akwa United’s poor NPFL campaign, where they currently sit 19th with 32 points, Boboye remains confident in his team’s ability to challenge for silverware.

“The FA Cup is always full of surprises, but for us, it is a fresh opportunity and a great avenue to secure continental football next season. We cannot afford to underestimate any team. Our focus is on giving our best in every match to progress as far as possible,” Boboye speaking to the club’s media
He further highlighted Akwa United’s history in the tournament, having won the Federation Cup in 2015 and 2017, and expressed his desire to add a third title within a decade.
“Winning the FA Cup three times in 10 years would be a huge honor for the club and our fans. Personally, I won this competition as a player in 2005 with Dolphins, but I have yet to win it as a coach. I would love to achieve that milestone with Akwa United this year.”
Recent Resurgence in the League
Though Akwa United has struggled for most of the season, Boboye’s return has brought some stability. The team is currently on a three-game unbeaten streak, securing two wins and a draw, providing a glimmer of hope in their fight against relegation.
“We are improving, and the players are responding well. If we continue this momentum, we can turn things around in both the league and the cup,” Boboye added.
