Championship leaders Coventry agree deal to sign Super Eagles workhorse Onyeka

Coventry City are closing in on the signing of Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka from Brentford.

The Championship club are understood to have agreed terms with Brentford on a loan move that includes an option to make the transfer permanent in the summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that an agreement is in place between all parties, with the deal described as “here we go”, pending the player’s approval.

The 28-year-old has recently returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, where he was a regular starter for Nigeria, featuring four times during the Super Eagles’ run to the latter stages of the tournament.

Despite his international involvement, Onyeka has struggled for game time at Brentford this season, making six Premier League appearances without a start. The midfielder has found opportunities limited under head coach Keith Andrews, prompting the club to make him available for transfer.

Onyeka spent last season on loan at FC Augsburg, where he made 34 appearances across all competitions, gaining regular minutes in the Bundesliga.

He remains under contract with Brentford until the summer of 2027, with the club holding an option to extend by a further year.

Coventry City are pushing to strengthen their squad as they look to maintain momentum in the Championship. Frank Lampard’s side are among the leading contenders in the promotion race but have recorded just two wins in their last six league matches and have not kept a clean sheet since late December.

The Sky Blues are hopeful that Onyeka’s experience at Premier League, Bundesliga and international level can add balance and steel to their midfield for the remainder of the campaign.
