CHAN 2024: What you need to know ahead of kick-off in East Africa

The 2024 CHAN kicks off August 2 across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Here’s what to know about teams, groups, venues, and format.

The TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 is now 25 days away from kick-off, with final preparations ramping up across the host nations—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The 8th edition of the CHAN, a tournament exclusive to players who compete in their respective domestic leagues, will run from August 2 to August 30, marking the first time the competition will be jointly hosted by three countries.

This year’s event also serves as a crucial test run for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will also be staged by the same East African trio.

Key Dates and Opening Fixtures

The opening match will be held at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, where hosts Tanzania take on Burkina Faso on August 2.

The final is scheduled for August 30 at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi, while Mandela National Stadium in Kampala will host the third-place playoff on August 29.

CHAN 2024 Stadiums

Following inspections and months of preparation, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has confirmed that all selected venues are match-ready. The five stadiums approved to host games include:

  • Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Dar es Salaam (60,000 seats)
  • Amaan Stadium, Zanzibar (15,000 seats)
  • Moi International Sports Centre, Nairobi (60,000 seats)
  • Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi (30,000 seats)
  • Mandela National Stadium, Kampala (42,000 seats)
Teams and Group Format

A record 19 teams will contest the 2024 CHAN, divided into four groups.

Groups A, B, and C each contain five teams, while Group D has four. The top two teams in each group will advance to the quarter-finals.

The Groups
  • Group A: Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia
  • Group B: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
  • Group C: Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Algeria, South Africa
  • Group D: Senegal, Congo, Sudan, Nigeria

Senegal, the defending champions, return to defend their crown, alongside record winners DR Congo and Morocco. Debutants Kenya and Central African Republic will be hoping to make a lasting first impression.
