Chiamaka Nnadozie shines but Brighton fall in Man City comeback

Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie impressed but Brighton lost to Manchester City in the WSL after leading through Fran Kirby’s early goal.

Manchester City came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 at the Academy Stadium, denying Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie a second successive clean sheet in the Women’s Super League.

The 24-year-old, who joined Brighton this summer from Paris FC, had marked her debut with a Player of the Match display against Aston Villa. But despite several key saves, she could not stop City on Friday night.

Fran Kirby put Brighton ahead in the 14th minute after Michelle Agyemang’s effort was parried, but City turned the game after the break.

Khadija Shaw equalised with a diving header before Aoba Fujino set up Yui Hasegawa for the winner in the 74th minute handing new City boss Andrée Jeglertz his first WSL victory.

Nnadozie still impressed, notably denying Vivianne Miedema in the first half, underlining her reputation as one of Europe’s leading goalkeepers.

Her time in France brought three UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifications and a Coupe de France triumph, alongside individual honours including D1 Arkema Goalkeeper of the Season and UNFP’s Best Goalkeeper.

Nnadozie first came to global attention with her performances at the 2019 Women’s World Cup and remains a key figure for Nigeria’s Super Falcons.
