Chiamaka Okwuchukwu makes dream NWSL debut with record-breaking goal

Nigerian striker Chiamaka Okwuchukwu wasted no time making an impact in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), scoring just 1 minute and 48 seconds after coming on as a substitute for San Diego Wave in their match against Orlando Pride.

Her goal, coming less than two minutes after stepping onto the pitch, is now the second-fastest goal ever scored by a player on their NWSL regular-season debut, behind only Ebony Salmon’s 55-second record set in 2021.

Okwuchukwu’s explosive debut didn’t come as a surprise to those who followed her rise.

The 19-year-old striker joined San Diego Wave in 2024 from Nigerian club Rivers Angels after an impressive showing at the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

At the tournament, she was instrumental in Nigeria’s quarterfinal run, showcasing her blistering pace, clinical finishing, and ability to create chances in tight spaces.

Her standout performances earned her a nomination as a finalist for the CAF Women’s Young Player of the Year award in 2024.

Making the leap from African football to the competitive NWSL is no small feat, but Okwuchukwu’s rapid adaptation speaks volumes about her talent and determination.

Her sharp movement, instinctive positioning, and killer instinct in front of goal could make her a key offensive weapon for San Diego Wave as they push for NWSL success this season.
