Chibuike Nwaiwu joins Trabzonspor in a ₦9.5bn transfer to earn ₦1.2bn per season

Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor have completed the signing of Nigerian midfielder Chibuike Godfrey Nwaiwu on a long-term deal from Austrian club Wolfsberger AC.

The 22-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract after successfully completing his medicals in Istanbul.

Trabzonspor confirmed in a statement to Turkey’s Public Disclosure Platform (KAP) that an agreement had been reached with Wolfsberger AC for Nwaiwu’s permanent transfer.

According to the disclosure, the Turkish club will pay a guaranteed fee of €5.5 million ( about 9.5 billion Naira) , spread across seven instalments, as a contract termination payment to Wolfsberger.

The deal also includes additional performance-related clauses, with reports suggesting the overall package could rise with bonuses.

Nwaiwu will earn a guaranteed salary of €350,000 ( about 600 million naira) for the second half of the 2025–26 season, rising to €700,000 ( about 1.2 billion Naira) per season for each of the remaining years of his contract. Trabzonspor also confirmed that five per cent of the player’s gross salary will be paid as a management service fee.

Nwaiwu began his senior career in Nigeria with Heartland FC in 2021 before moving to Enyimba in October 2022. He played a key role in Enyimba’s title-winning campaign as the Aba-based club lifted the 2022–23 Nigeria Professional Football League crown.

In September 2024, the midfielder moved to the Austrian Bundesliga with Wolfsberger AC, signing a contract that ran until 2027.

He went on to feature in the final of the 2024–25 Austrian Cup, helping Wolfsberger claim the first major domestic trophy in the club’s history.

The versatile midfielder now joins Trabzonspor as they target a sustained title challenge in the Turkish Super Lig. He will also link up with fellow Nigerians Anthony Nwakeme and  Paul Onuachu, who rejoined the club from Southampton in the summer of 2024.
