Philip Otele became the first Nigerian to score for Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga, but his side were beaten 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
The 26-year-old striker opened the scoring in the 19th minute at the Signal Iduna Park, finishing from close range to mark a historic milestone for both himself and the club.
Otele’s goal ensured he became the first Nigerian to register a Bundesliga goal for Hamburg, years after Macauley Chrisantus was linked with the club without making a competitive appearance.
Hamburg extended their lead before half-time when Albert Sambi Lokonga struck powerfully to make it 2-0, putting the visitors in control.
However, Dortmund responded after the break. Ramy Bensebaini reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute, before Serhou Guirassy equalised five minutes later.
Bensebaini then converted a second penalty in the 84th minute to complete the comeback and secure all three points for the hosts.
