Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has booked his place in the men’s Shot Put final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The national record holder threw 20.83m in his opening attempt, finishing fifth in Group A and seventh overall to secure qualification.
It marks the 32-year-old’s fifth World Championships appearance, and comes after the disappointment of missing the final in Budapest two years ago.

Enekwechi followed up with 20.71m on his second throw before landing another 20.83m to close out a consistent series and comfortably place among the top 12.
Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Oyesade Olatoye opened her account in the women’s Hammer Throw, recording 66.78m with her first attempt.

She fouled her second effort, but improved to 68.82m in her final round. Olatoye, Nigeria’s only entrant in the event, placed 10th in Group A and missed out on qualification.

The 28-year-old has previously represented Nigeria at the Olympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games.
In the women’s discus, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons, competing in her fourth World Championships, managed 59.45m in her opener before fouling her next two attempts, finishing 20th overall.
Obiageri Amaechi, appearing in her second global championships, threw 55.69m and 48.82m to place 33rd.

The men’s Shot Put final takes place later this week, with Enekwechi aiming to reach the podium for the first time in his career.
