The goalkeeping department of the Nigerian national team has become a growing talking point as Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle continues to assess his options ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
The Super Eagles have relied heavily on Stanley Nwabali in recent competitions, but uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeper’s club situation has raised questions about stability in the position.
Nwabali, who was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the country’s run to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is currently without a club following his departure from Chippa United. His status has fueled debate about whether Chelle may look to expand the goalkeeping pool as the Super Eagles prepare for upcoming international matches.
While established options such as Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho remain in contention, the Nigerian Football Federation has also been exploring additional alternatives. That search has now received a major boost following the confirmation that another goalkeeper of Nigerian heritage is eligible to represent the country.

Okonkwo, who was born in Camden, London to Nigerian parents, previously represented England at youth level, featuring for the country’s under-15, under-16, under-17 and under-18 teams during his development years. However, he never made a senior appearance for England, allowing him to pursue a switch of international allegiance to Nigeria.
The goalkeeper came through the academy of Arsenal, where he spent more than a decade developing as one of the club’s promising youth players before moving into senior football. During his early professional career he had loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and SK Sturm Graz before joining Wrexham A.F.C. initially on loan in 2023.

With FIFA now confirming his eligibility, Okonkwo could soon be in line for a first senior call-up to Nigeria. Reports indicate that he may be considered for the Super Eagles’ upcoming friendly matches against Poland national football team and Portugal national football team later this year.
His arrival potentially strengthens the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping options at a time when Chelle is seeking stability in the position. With competition expected from Nwabali, Okoye and Uzoho, Okonkwo’s international switch could intensify the battle for Nigeria’s number one jersey in the months ahead.
