Ex Senegalese star reveals why JayJay Okocha did not win the Balon Do’r

Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has admitted that failing to win the CAF African Player of the Year award remains one of his biggest career regrets.

Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, widely regarded as one of the most talented footballers to emerge from Africa, never won the prestigious African Footballer of the Year award despite his illustrious career.

According to former Senegalese international Habib Beye, Okocha’s failure to win the award, including the Ballon d’Or, can be attributed to his lack of experience playing for top-tier clubs. Beye believes Okocha’s talent was overshadowed by his club career, which didn’t reach the same level as some of his contemporaries.

Okocha had a remarkable career, playing for several top clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Fenerbahce, and Bolton Wanderers.

He also had success on the international stage, winning the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and the Atlanta 1996 Olympics gold medal with the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Despite his impressive performances, Okocha was never able to capture the big awards that his career and talents deserved.

The Nigerian football legend was nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 1995 but did not receive any votes. He was also nominated for the CAF African Footballer of the Year award three times, finishing second in 1998 and 2004, and third in 2004.

The 1998 loss to Morocco’s Mustapha Hadji was particularly contentious, given Okocha’s impressive performances at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

In a recent interview, Beye highlighted Okocha’s talent and potential, stating that he could have won multiple Ballon d’Or awards if he had played for bigger clubs. “Okocha is one of the great players who could not play in big clubs. Ronaldinho could have had two to four gold balloons. Jay Jay Okocha is such a talent and could have been too,” Beye said. Despite not receiving the recognition he deserved during his playing career, Okocha is still widely regarded as one of the greatest African footballers of all time.

Okocha’s legacy continues to inspire young players, and his impact on Nigerian football remains significant. His story serves as a reminder that talent alone is not enough to achieve success, and that playing for top-tier clubs can provide the platform and exposure needed to win individual awards. Nevertheless, Okocha’s contributions to African football will always be remembered, and his talent and skill will continue to be celebrated by fans around the world.
