Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili has broken her silence on the controversy surrounding her alleged switch to Turkey. After a stellar performance at the ATX Classic in Texas, where she won her qualifying heat with a new personal best of 10.87 seconds and the final with a windy 10.78 seconds, Ofili took to social media to share her gratitude.
“God’s timing is perfect, praise you Lord. New PB (10:87) Big win in the final (10:78w),” Ofili posted, without directly addressing the nationality switch controversy. Her impressive performance has earned her a spot among the sixth-fastest women in the world this year and potentially secured her place in the Diamond League debut at the Prefontaine Classic.

Reports emerged that Ofili was exploring a switch to Turkey due to alleged poor treatment by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). The federation has expressed disappointment and regret over Ofili’s decision, citing recurring issues with her commitment to national team duties. AFN President Tonobok Okowa stated that the federation respects Ofili’s choice but finds it painful, wishing her success in her future endeavors.

The AFN and the National Sports Commission (NSC) have both responded to the controversy. While the NSC clarified that Ofili remains a Nigerian athlete as they have not received any formal notification of a switch, the AFN acknowledged that communication with Ofili broke down after the Paris Olympics. Despite efforts to repair the relationship, Okowa admitted that Ofili is “difficult to deal with.
