Federation Cup Final 2025: Preview, history and drama as 49-year wait meets fairytale run in Lagos

An underdog story, a 49-year drought, and a defending champion—Lagos is set for a Federation Cup final like never before.

The stage is set for a historic double-header this Saturday, 28 June 2025, as the President’s Federation Cup reaches its climax at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.

It will be the second successive year Nigeria’s oldest domestic football competition concludes at the famed waterfront venue, which has hosted more cup finals than any other stadium in the country.

The action begins at 1:00 PM with the women’s final, as defending champions Rivers Angels take on Nasarawa Amazons in what promises to be a fiercely contested battle.

Rivers Angels, who edged Naija Ratels 1-0 in the 2024 final at the same venue, are targeting back-to-back titles. With a cup pedigree and a stable core, the Port Harcourt-based side are clear favourites, but Nasarawa Amazons are known for their tactical discipline and counter-attacking threat.

Fairytale Final for Abakaliki FC, Kwara United Eye Long-Awaited First Title

At 4:00 PM, attention turns to the men’s final, where Abakaliki FC, the tournament’s surprise package, face Kwara United, a club with unfinished business.

Abakaliki’s dream run has been the story of the tournament. After stunning Enyimba 2-0 in the Round of 16, they battled through two consecutive penalty shootouts against Nasarawa United and Ikorodu City to reach their first-ever final.

Kwara United, meanwhile, are chasing their first national title in 49 years. Having eliminated Akwa United and edged Rangers International 1-0 in the semi-finals, they now stand just one win away from glory — and a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

Only one Kwara-based team has ever reached the final before: Alyufsalam Rocks, who lost to Rangers in 1976.

Between 1945 and 1962, it hosted 18 Federation Cup finals, with the venue continuing to play host under various names — from the Governor’s Cup to the Challenge Cup.

In total, the Lagos ground has staged 60 finals, more than any other stadium in Nigeria.

Saturday’s matches will be broadcast live on NTA, AIT, and NFF TV, bringing the drama to fans nationwide.
