Felix Agu, the former Germany U-21 international, has opened up about his heartfelt decision to represent Nigeria at the senior level, turning down the opportunity to play for Julian Nagelsmann’s German national team.

The 25-year-old Werder Bremen defender, who played a key role in his club’s impressive 8th-place Bundesliga finish this season, is now set to make his debut for the Super Eagles in the upcoming high-profile friendly against Ghana.

Agu, who contributed three goals in 21 league appearances this campaign, received his long-awaited call-up to the Nigerian national team after being included in head coach Eric Chelle’s squad for the Unity Cup. Having now been officially cleared by FIFA to switch allegiance, the versatile full-back expressed his excitement and pride at finally realizing his dream of wearing the green and white of Nigeria.

Agu also highlighted the immense talent within the Super Eagles squad as a major factor in his choice. “It’s an honor to represent such a great footballing nation. Looking at the quality in this team and what we can achieve together, I knew I wanted to contribute and be part of this journey.”

The former VfL Osnabrück defender is one of several new faces who could make their debut in the much-anticipated “Jollof Derby” against Ghana at the Gtech Community Stadium. With Nigeria’s rich football history and passionate fanbase, Agu’s decision symbolizes a homecoming—a chance to write his own chapter in the legacy of the three-time African champions.
