Flying Eagles fall to Norway despite dominant display at U20 World Cup

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles began their FIFA U20 World Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Norway on Monday, despite dominating much of the contest.

The decisive moment came in the ninth minute when Norway converted a disputed penalty. From then on, Ladan Bosso’s side pushed hard for an equaliser but were repeatedly denied.

The Flying Eagles also had strong appeals for penalties waved away on two occasions after the restart, adding to their frustration as they camped in the Norwegian half.

Kparobo Arierhi went close two minutes after the break, firing narrowly wide inside the box. Moments later, Tahir Maigana’s powerful strike rattled the base of the post.

The pressure continued to mount. In the 71st minute, Nasiru Salihu’s rising shot skimmed just over the bar, while Maigana also went close again late on with a fierce effort from distance.

Despite wave after wave of attacks, Norway defended in numbers to hold on for victory.

Nigeria, two-time runners-up in the competition, now face Saudi Arabia in their second group match on Thursday, while Norway take on Colombia.
