The Flying Eagles of Nigeria began their 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a solid 1-0 win over Tunisia, thanks to a first-half strike from Auwal Ibrahim.
Ibrahim calmly finished in the 38th minute after a perfectly weighted assist from Emmanuel Okoro, capping off a slick attacking move that gave Nigeria a well-deserved lead.
The Flying Eagles showed strong intent from the outset, controlling possession and dictating the pace of the game.

Tunisia fought back after the break, increasing pressure on Nigeria’s defense. The tension reached a boiling point in the 80th minute when Nigeria were awarded a penalty after Rickson appeared to have been brought down inside the box. However, after a VAR review, the referee overturned the decision, ruling no foul.

Tunisia pushed for a late equaliser , it was Nigeria’s goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt who delivered a game-saving moment in the 89th minute. The shot-stopper pulled off a brilliant reflex save to deny Tunisian forward Duva from point-blank range, preserving the Flying Eagles’ slender lead.
Ibrahim, 19, plays his club football with Nigeria Premier Football league side Akwa United and was named Man of the Match.

The win marks back-to-back victories for Nigeria against Tunisia at this level, following a 4-0 rout in their previous AFCON meeting in 2023. The result gives Nigeria an early boost in Group B, where they are joined by Tunisia, Morocco, and debutants Kenya.
Nigeria’s next group match is a crucial clash against Morocco on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
