Forgotten Nigerian wonderkid Akinkunmi Amoo closes dark chapter in his career

Former Nigerian youth international Akinkunmi Amoo has scored his first professional goal in over three years, marking what many see as a symbolic turning point in a career overshadowed by controversy and personal setbacks.

The 23-year-old midfielder found the net for Shanghai Jiading Huilong in China’s League One, helping his side to a 2-1 victory over Foshan Nanshi in match day 13 of the campaign.

His 37th-minute strike, a composed half-volley with his weaker right foot, was the match-winner and his first goal since March 2022.

Once hailed as one of Africa’s most exciting young talents, Amoo was part of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets setup and later secured a €4.4 million move to FC Copenhagen in 2022, making him one of Nigeria’s most expensive youth exports.

He served a one-year prison sentence and received a six-year ban from reentering the country.

After an unremarkable stint with Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia earlier this year, Amoo terminated his contract and sought a fresh start in Asia, signing for Jiading Huilong in February 2025.
