From underdog to Super Eagles: Obasogie reveals how Nwabali’s rise inspires him

Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie praises Stanley Nwabali’s rise to Nigeria’s No. 1, calling it an inspiration for aspiring goalkeepers.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has hailed Stanley Nwabali’s incredible journey from an overlooked talent to Nigeria’s undisputed No. 1, calling it a source of motivation for aspiring shot-stoppers.

Just a few years ago, Stanley Nwabali was relatively unknown, playing in Nigeria Premier football league (NPFL) with little international recognition. Unlike his predecessors, who emerged from top European leagues, Nwabali’s path to the Super Eagles was unconventional.

Before his breakthrough, Nigeria struggled to find a consistent goalkeeper, with Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye and Daniel Akpeyi unable to cement the role long-term.

That changed when former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro handed Nwabali a call-up ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Despite initial skepticism, Nwabali seized his opportunity at AFCON 2023, delivering a stellar performance. He played all seven matches, kept four clean sheets, and became a national hero in the semi-final against South Africa, saving two crucial penalties in the shootout.

His fearless performances catapulted him to the top, earning him the trust of fans and teammates alike. Now Nigeria’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, his rise has inspired others—including Amas Obasogie.

Obasogie: ‘Nwabali’s Success Shows Hard Work Pays Off’

Speaking to TheCable, the former Bendel Insurance goalkeeper reflected on Nwabali’s journey and how it motivates him to push for his own breakthrough.

“I admire the hard work Stanley Nwabali has put in to claim the No. 1 spot. He proved himself in the NPFL before making his mark at Chippa United. His story proves that hard work and perseverance pay off. Being in the Super Eagles camp is a huge opportunity for me.”

Obasogie, now on his second senior call-up, is eager to follow in Nwabali’s footsteps and hopes to make his Super Eagles debut against Rwanda on Friday.

“I train with the mindset that I am a Super Eagles goalkeeper. I dream of wearing the national team jersey, and if the opportunity comes, I am ready to take it.”
