‘Fufu boy’ Karim Adeyemi finally reveals why he chose Germany over Nigeria

Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi has in a recent interview with Oma Sports finally shed light on his decision to represent Germany over Nigeria at the international level.

Born to a Nigerian father and Romanian mother in Munich, Adeyemi’s choice has sparked curiosity among football fans, particularly in Nigeria.

Adeyemi, 23, revealed that his decision was largely influenced by his positive experience with the German Football Association. “It’s a difficult question. I have to answer this to my father a lot of times,” Adeyemi said, acknowledging the discussions he has with his father about his choice.

“It’s just like this, I have offers from Germany [Football Association], I had a good feeling there. And, at the end, I had to play for Germany. This is how easy it is.”

Despite choosing Germany, Adeyemi has often expressed his appreciation for his Nigerian heritage. In a viral moment following a Champions League match against Chelsea in 2023, the pacey winger credited part of his speed to a beloved Nigerian delicacy, fufu. “I eat a lot of African food, but I have good genetics from my dad,” Adeyemi said to CBS. “It’s called fufu from Nigeria and also very good.”

Adeyemi’s decision not to play for Nigeria is another challenge the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) faces in convincing dual-eligible players to represent the Super Eagles. However, the NFF has had success in persuading players like Ademola Lookman, Joe Aribo, and Calvin Bassey to don the green and white.

Adeyemi’s rise to prominence began with Red Bull Salzburg before he sealed a move to Borussia Dortmund. He made his senior debut for Germany in 2021 and has since become a key player for the national team.

While Adeyemi’s decision may have implications for Nigerian football, his appreciation for his heritage and culture is evident.
