Galatasaray stay perfect as Osimhen closes in on history

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen continued his bright start in Turkey as Galatasaray beat Rizespor 3-1 to maintain their 100% record in the Turkish Super Lig.

The defending champions went into the match on the back of three consecutive wins without conceding, and they made an assured start in front of their home fans.

Davinson Sánchez opened the scoring after 20 minutes, meeting Gabriel Sara’s corner with a towering header to give Okan Buruk’s side the lead.

Despite their dominance, Galatasaray could not add to their tally before half-time. That changed in the second half when Nigerian forward Osimhen struck, heading home Abdülkerim Bardakcı’s cross in the 65th minute to double the advantage.

The goal was Osimhen’s second of the campaign and his 28th in the Turkish Super Lig, putting him joint-sixth among Nigerian players in the competition’s history and just two shy of Austin Okocha’s long-standing mark of 30.

Rizespor briefly threatened a comeback when Dal Varesanovic reduced the deficit, but Mauro Icardi netted in stoppage time to secure Galatasaray’s fourth consecutive win.

The result leaves the Istanbul giants top of the table with 12 points from four matches, while Rizespor remain 15th, still searching for their first win of the season.
