Ghanaian referee plays down backlash after Nigeria’s AFCON exit

CAF’s appointment of Ghanaian and South African officials for Nigeria vs Morocco semi-final sparks debate among Nigerian fans.

The Ghanaian referee who officiated Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final defeat by Morocco has responded to criticism of his performance, saying the controversy surrounding the match was “just football”.

Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea, a FIFA-licensed official, faced intense backlash following the goalless tie, which Morocco won on penalties, with Nigerian fans questioning several decisions made during the match.

In brief remarks in Rabat, Laryea appeared relaxed about the reaction to his officiating and suggested that dissatisfaction from supporters was an inevitable part of high-stakes football.

“It was a crazy game,” Laryea said. “I know they’re not happy with me, but it’s all good. It’s football, it’s nothing much” he told Sporty TV presenter KlintonKod

The 38-year-old was at the centre of scrutiny over a number of foul calls, including incidents that Nigerians felt went against the Super Eagles at key moments of the semi-final.

Following the match, criticism spilled onto social media, with fans directing comments at the referee’s online accounts. Laryea later deactivated his Instagram page as debate around the officiating continued.

CAF has not issued a formal statement on Laryea’s performance, and it remains unclear whether the referee will face any review or assessment by the governing body.
