Henry Onyekuru to reunite with Etebo in Turkey

Super Eagles winger Henry Onyekuru is set for a return to Turkish football, with reports in Turkey suggesting he will reunite with national teammate Oghenekaro Etebo at newly-promoted Gençlerbirliği.

Onyekuru, 28, has been a free agent since ending his stint with Saudi Arabian club Al Fayha, where his playing time dwindled after a falling-out with the club’s management.

Since then, the former Everton player has been training privately while weighing offers, with multiple Turkish clubs including Fenerbahçe, Besiktas, and Alanyaspor expressing interest.

According to Turkish outlet Skorer, it is Gençlerbirliği who have won the race for his signature thanks in large part to the influence of Oghenekaro Etebo, who starred for the Ankara-based club last season.

Etebo played a pivotal role in Gençlerbirliği’s promotion to the Süper Lig, featuring in 27 league matches as they finished second in the TFF 1. Lig.

His close relationship with Onyekuru reportedly helped convince the winger to choose the club as his next destination.

A return to Turkey represents familiar ground for Onyekuru, who previously enjoyed productive spells at Galatasaray and Adana Demirspor, scoring over 20 goals combined in the top flight.

His experience and attacking flair are expected to strengthen Gençlerbirliği’s squad as they prepare for life back in the Süper Lig.

If the deal is finalized, it would mark the fourth time Onyekuru has played in Turkey, a league where he has consistently thrived and remained a fan favourite.
