The Nigeria National League (NNL) has come down hard on Godswill Akpabio FC of Uyo and Barau FC of Kano for their involvement in separate incidents of violence and intimidation targeting match officials.
In a firm statement issued this week, the league’s governing body outlined a string of punishments aimed at curbing rising misconduct and reinforcing discipline across its fixtures.
During their Matchday 15 encounter against Rovers FC of Calabar at the Uyo Township Stadium on 26 April, Godswill Akpabio FC’s players, officials, and fans reportedly harassed match officials throughout the game. The match ended 2-2, but the trouble had already begun by half-time.
One player, Austin Ajibawo, physically intimidated the first assistant referee and received a caution during the game. Following further post-match assaults, the NNL found the club guilty of multiple infractions.
In response, the NNL has fined Godswill Akpabio FC ₦3,000,000, which they must pay before their next match. The club will also play their next two home games behind closed doors under strict guidelines.

These guidelines limit stadium access to a specific number of security personnel, officials, medical staff, ball boys, and accredited media.
In addition, the club must pay ₦250,000 in medical bills for the assaulted officials, and Ajibawo will serve a two-match suspension. The Akwa Ibom State Football Association now has seven days to name those responsible for the attacks or present proof of disciplinary action.

Barau FC also faced similar disciplinary action after their home game against Gombe United on 26 April at the Danbatta Township Stadium. Despite winning 2-0, the home team’s fans disrupted the match by throwing objects at Gombe United’s technical bench. The violent actions caused injuries and forced a 15-minute stoppage.
The NNL has fined Barau FC ₦2,000,000 and ordered them to pay ₦150,000 in medical expenses to the affected Gombe United officials. Like Godswill Akpabio FC, they must host their next two home matches under strict closed-door conditions.

The change accommodates Wikki Tourists’ President Federation Cup quarter-final clash with Ikorodu City, which is scheduled for Tuesday, 3 May, at the Bwari Stadium in Abuja.
