How Imama Amapakabo’s game plan ended Tunde Sanni’s Kwara United tenure

Imama fumes as Rangers beat Abia Warriors 2–0 in Enugu, blasting poor first-half play and matchday antics in a fiery Oriental Derby.

Imama Amapakabo’s tactical masterclass in Ilorin proved decisive as Abia Warriors’ 1–0 victory over Kwara United not only earned a vital away win but also cost Tunde Sanni his job.

The Abia Warriors boss, known for his calm touchline demeanour and precise tactical setups, outsmarted Sanni’s men in every department during Sunday’s Nigeria Premier Football League clash at the llorin Township Stadium.

Kwara United began brightly, pushing high up the pitch and creating early pressure, but Amapakabo’s compact structure and swift transitions nullified their attack.

His decision to deploy Fatai Abdullahi deeper in midfield and stretch the flanks through Casmir Azubuike kept the Harmony Boys chasing shadows for much of the contest.

The turning point came early in the second half when an Abia Warriors press forced a defensive error, leading to a handball in the box.

Emeka Obioma converted from the spot in the 48th minute, his second goal in consecutive matches to hand Amapakabo’s side a deserved lead.

From then on, it was a coaching clinic. Amapakabo’s substitutions steadied the rhythm and soaked up Kwara’s late pressure, with goalkeeper Okiemute Odah pulling off two crucial saves to preserve a clean sheet.

The win was Abia Warriors’ fourth of the NPFL season, taking them third on the table with 12 points. It marked a swift recovery for Imama’s side, who were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup last week by Djoliba of Mali after faltering in the first round.

For Kwara United, the loss deepened their crisis. The club, who lifted the President Federation Cup last season under Sanni and featured in the CAF Confederation Cup before crashing out to Asante Kotoko over two legs (4–3 in Accra, 1–0 in Abeokuta), are now in turmoil.
