Hull boss raises Ajayi fitness concern before international break

Sergej Jakirovic says he is concerned about Semi Ajayi joining up with Nigeria during the March international break as the defender continues to manage injury issues.

The Hull City centre-back has endured a difficult period with recurring hamstring problems, having suffered multiple setbacks over the past year.

His latest injury came during Nigeria’s third-place match at the AFCON 2025, and he has only recently returned to action at club level.

Ajayi has completed just two full matches since January, prompting caution from his club manager as he departs for international duty.

“It’s good we have a two-week break,” Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside. “We have eight international players, and I hope they get some minutes, but it’s more important they stay healthy.”

The Hull coach emphasize the logistical and physical challenges facing his squad, with players travelling across different continents during the break.

“Ivor Pandur is in South America, Semi Ajayi is in Jordan, and Liam Miller is with Canada in Toronto, so that could be a problem,” he said.

Despite his concerns, Jakirovic acknowledged the importance of international football for players aiming to secure places ahead of major tournaments.

“I understand the World Cup is coming, and the players want to be on that list. It is a big dream for them. We are proud of our international players,” he added.
